Contraindications
- Severe renal impairment (use fentanyl instead)
- Acute/severe asthma
- Paralytic ileus
Clinical pearls
- Avoid in renal failure — active metabolite morphine-6-glucuronide accumulates
- Causes histamine release — can cause hypotension and bronchospasm
- Use fentanyl instead in hemodynamically unstable patients
