Clinical pearls
- BMI is a population-level screening tool — it does not distinguish fat from muscle
- Asian populations have higher cardiovascular risk at lower BMI thresholds (consider obesity at BMI ≥27.5)
- BMI does not apply to children — use growth charts and BMI percentiles for ages 2–20
- Waist circumference adds independent cardiovascular risk information beyond BMI
