Clinical pearls

  • CKD-EPI is more accurate than Cockcroft-Gault at higher GFR values — use for CKD staging
  • Two measurements more than 3 months apart are needed for a formal diagnosis of CKD
  • Creatinine is affected by muscle mass — may overestimate GFR in cachectic or elderly patients and underestimate in muscular patients
  • The 2021 equation removed the race coefficient to address health equity concerns
